What is G6PD Allergy? And other key questions.

G6PD is a form of deficiency that is inherited from one's lineage. This is when the body does not have of a specific enzyme in the body called Glucose-6-Phosphate-Dehydrogenase (G6PD). This G6PD is the enzyme helps to break down read blood cell in the body and to work well. So, a lack of G6PD can be a cause of hemolytic anemia which is when red blood cells break down faster than they are made afresh. 

What are common signs and symptoms of G6PD?

Some of the most common symptoms are fatigue, extreme or persistent tiredness, jaundice, dark-colored urine, anemia (can be severe anemia in the form of acute hemolytic anemia), shortness of breath, enlarged spleen, being pale than usual etc. Despite these common symptoms of G6PD, some people who have G6PD deficiency don't have any symptoms. 

How do I know if my child has G6PD? 

You can check if they have any of the common symptoms written above such as persistent tiredness, very dark-colored urine, anemia, very pale skin (especially more noticeable in darker skin toned children) etc. 

Is G6PD deficiency serious?

Yes, it can be. If, for example, there is a severe reaction to a trigger substance, it can lead to kidney failure. in some other cases, some people with G6PD have life-threatening hemolytic anemia that usually require blood transfusion.

What are G6PD triggers? 

There are many things that can trigger G6PD reaction. For example, camphor/moth balls is known to trigger G6PD reaction when placed in close proximity to children/adults. Other, triggers include certain medication, certain infections, certain foods amongst others

Can G6PD deficient person take COVID-19 Vaccine?

Yes, they can because COVID 19 vaccine is just like any other routine vaccine and there hasn't been any specific clinical concerns regarding COVID 19 vaccines and G6PD  deficiency. Of course, speak to your doctor to double check and clarify your concerns.

There are no known correlation between G6PD and COVID 19 but it is possible that there are 

Does G6PD affect brain?

In studies conducted using mice, it was found that G6PD deficient mice show cognitive and motor abnormalities. (reference: sciencedirect.com)

Can G6PD drink milk?

Yes, however, milk containing soy ingredients are not suitable for people (including children) with G6PD.
